Pulling from our own collective conference-going experiences, this guide is designed to give you a bit of useful information with respect to the event venue itself – the UT College of Law. We also hope to offer up a small taste of what the surrounding Knoxville communities have to offer – places that certainly enrich our lives and make Knoxville stand out a bit.

LOCATION & ORIENTATION OF CAMPUS – The UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, KNOXVILLE:
The UT Knoxville campus and surrounding neighborhoods, including Downtown Knoxville, are very walkable. The main campus is roughly 910 acres in size and is bounded to the south by the Tennessee River. To its north is a largely residential neighborhood (called Fort Sanders or just “the Fort”).
Over time, as the campus grew, it pushed into this neighborhood, with Cumberland Avenue – a large, multi-lane municipal road that acts as a major thoroughfare for the campus area – effectively dividing campus into a north and a south section. The College of Law is located on the northern side, “across the street” from the bulk of the main campus, at 1505 Cumberland Avenue. It is further situated between 16th Street and James Agee Street (which turn into Volunteer Boulevard and Phillip Fulmer Way, respectively, as they extend through the main campus).
From 17th Street, westward to Alcoa Highway, Cumberland Avenue is most often referred to as “the Strip.” The “start” or “top” of the Strip is at 17th Street. It ends at the Alcoa Highway overpass.
When looking at a map, it’s important to know that Cumberland turns into Kingston Pike, west of the Alcoa Highway (HWY 129). This also demarcates the rough west-side boundary of the campus area.
In orienting yourself to the campus surrounds, know that Downtown Knoxville is essentially bounded on either side by Henley Street (to the west) and S. Central Street (to the east). The banks of the Tennessee River comprise the southern boundary of the Downtown (as is true for the campus) and Summit Hill Drive stands as a rough northern boundary.
Within the Downtown, there are essentially two distinct areas/sub-districts of interest: Market Square (an open-air mecca of renovated, historic buildings – known for shopping and dining) and Gay Street (a dynamic ten-block thoroughfare, consisting of a number of historic buildings, noted restaurants, drinking establishments, shopping, and entertainment venues.
Additionally, Gay Street is home to our two historic theaters and an arts district. It ranges from the Gay Street Bridge (which crosses over Tennessee River at the southern end) to West Jackson Avenue (the effective start of the Old City, addressed immediately below) and runs parallel with S. Central Street, to its east. At the corner of W. Summit Hill Drive, you’ll find Knoxville’s Visitors Center, famous for hosting the popular noon-time live performance WDVX radio show, “Blue Plate Special.”
To the northeast of Summit Hill (between Gay Street and S. Central) is an adjacent area known as the Old City. This area used to be recognized principally for its bars and nightclubs. Recent development, however, has somewhat blurred the distinction between portions of the Downtown (especially, on the far northern end of Gay St.) and the Old City. While there are still great drinking establishments in the Old City, quality restaurants and other businesses have moved in. Likewise, upscale bars have opened throughout Downtown proper. If you do opt to visit the Old City, know that many people regularly walk over in the earlier hours of the day or evening. You may, however, opt to take a taxi or call a ride-share service for the trip back to your hotel.
Adjacent to the Fort Sanders neighborhood and the UT Knoxville campus (between the campus and Downtown) is the Knoxville Convention Center and the World’s Fair Park (constructed for the 1982 World’s Fair). A distinct Fair landmark – the Sunsphere – can be seen from many vantage points in/around the UT campus and may serve as a handy navigation aid or “can’t miss” meeting point.
THE LAW COMPLEX:
From either of the event hotels, the easiest way to the College of Law is to walk westward, following White Avenue from the Cumberland House and either White Avenue or Clinch Avenue from the Hilton Knoxville to and across James Agee Street. If coming from the Hilton Knoxville or elsewhere Downtown, we highly recommend using the pedestrian bridge at Clinch Avenue to cross over Henley Street, which is a traffic-heavy, fast-moving roadway that separates Downtown from the Fort Sanders neighborhood and the campus.
Especially around campus, pedestrians must push the “push to cross” buttons, where installed. If not, they will not necessarily get the “walk” sign to light and the traffic light may cycle more quickly to allow car traffic to continue to pass.
The College of Law is comprised of two connected wings: the George C. Taylor Wing (which runs parallel to Cumberland and White Avenues) and The Law Library and Classroom Addition (which runs roughly perpendicular to those two roads). The two facilities basically form an L-shaped building.
The front of the College of Law faces Cumberland Avenue, meaning that the back (“behind” or “rear”) of the College faces White Avenue to the north. Internal to the building, this same nomenclature is used. Thus, the “rear rotunda” is that which is located most closely to White Avenue.
Entering from the Cumberland Avenue side (the front), you will be on the first floor – the location of three of four of the classrooms reserved for the conference. The fourth is located on the Second Floor.
Most folks who end up walking from the Cumberland House or one of the Downtown hotels will enter by way of the White Avenue entrance at the rear of the College of Law building. That also is where taxi sand rideshare vehicles will drop you off. Because of a change of elevation from the front, entering the College of Law building from White Avenue puts you directly on the second floor.
Though each major entrance to the College has stairs, there is an ADA-accessible ramp to the left of each entrance. Elevators are located across each rotunda, on the right as you enter.

Breakfast both days and lunch, as well as the reception on Thursday, will be held in the rear rotunda on the first floor, between Classrooms 132 and 135. Please note that the College has installed filtered water stations on each floor of the Library & Classroom Addition. They are located just outside the restrooms, near a bank of elevators off the front rotunda. We encourage folks to use reusable bottles, whenever practical.
Please don’t be embarrassed should you get turned around a little bit, when inside our building complex. Nearly everybody does. It doesn’t help that we effectively have two third floors that don’t line up in elevation! One can generally tell which half of the building one is in, based on the flooring. Marble stairways and nice, stone floors indicate that you are in The Law Library and Classroom Addition, where both rotundas are located. Tile or carpeting are mostly found in the George C. Taylor Wing – also the location (on the first floor) of most of the amenities, such as our vending machines, microwaves, and tables at which you can sit (an area collectively termed “the Commons”).
At front, just off the Commons, we also have a lovely outdoor patio, with seating. This may be a nice place to take your lunch each day, weather permitting. However, smoking and vaping are not allowed within 25 feet of all doorways, windows, and ventilation systems.
Should you need a little quiet time, we’d recommend taking advantage of our Law Library – the entrance to which is located just off the front, Cumberland Avenue, rotunda. There is also some hallway seating on the 3rd Floor of The Law Library and Classroom Addition.

GETTING AROUND (OTHER THAN WALKING):
DRIVING & PARKING
The Interstate (I-40) cuts through all of Knoxville and runs parallel with Cumberland Avenue/Kingston Pike. This is how most drivers get to Downtown and the UT Knoxville campus. Off of the Interstate, one can either take the 17th Street or the Henley Street exit. Other routes will run you around the perimeter of the campus, taking you south to the Tennessee River. Neyland Drive runs along the river, from one end of the campus to the other.
If you are driving, parking is most readily available directly behind the College of Law building, in the Volunteer Hall Parking Garage. The entrance to the parking garage is directly across from the White Avenue Entrance. Campus parking is all paid parking. We can help direct you to the best way to access the conference. RIDE-SHARE SERVICES
Since traffic cannot stop in front of the College of Law building, taxis and rideshare services will drop you off at (and pick you up from) the White Avenue entrance. Remember that this entrance leads onto the second floor of the building.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Knoxville does operate a public bus system, known as KAT (Knoxville Area Transit). Routing and fare Information can be found here. KAT also operates a system of trolley buses, which are completely free for all passengers. There are three trolley routes that serve Downtown Knoxville and the UT area:
Blue Line | Knoxville Station, The Civic Coliseum and waterfront pathway
Green Line | The Old City and Gay Street
Orange Line | University of Tennessee and Downtown

Knoxville is a great city for walking, hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and (mountain) biking. While there are fantastic spots all around town, for a shorter stay, we recommend:
