Master of Legal Studies: Design Your Own Course of Study

All students who pursue the Master of Legal Studies degree or Graduate Certificate in Legal Studies have the flexibility to design a schedule of courses that relates to their field of work or study.

All students are required to take (1) Structure and Operation of the American Legal System and (2) Introduction to Legal Reasoning and Communication.  MLS students are also required to take two courses from the following list: Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, Property, and Torts.

  • Intellectual Property
  • Business Organizations
  • Contract Management
  • The Regulation of Work
  • Employment Law Compliance
  • Legislation and Regulation
  • Legal Research
  • Evidence

This list is subject to change. All courses listed above are designed specifically for students pursuing the MLS or Graduate Certificate and are offered online in an asynchronous fashion unless indicated otherwise.  With some exceptions, students pursuing the MLS or Graduate Certificate through the Knoxville Campus enrollment option are permitted to take JD courses.
