Lighting the Way for 10 Years:
A Symposium on Leadership Law and Lawyering
The University of Tennessee College of Law’s Institute for Professional Leadership has been “Leading the Way for 10 Years” and is celebrating with a symposium on October 24 and 25, 2024. This is the third symposium sponsored by the Institute and features panels of academics and practitioners from across the country who will discuss and lead discussions about legal leadership trends and challenges, including diversity, self-leadership, and empowering lawyers to lead clients, organizations and advocacy groups.
Each of us, as a professional leader, bears a torch. The Torchbearer is a symbol of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and an inspiration for our work. In that spirit, our 2024 symposium is designed to provide enlightenment to participants through both reflections on past achievements in law leadership teaching and scholarship and the encouragement of new ideas that foster the continued development of instruction, research, writing, identity and skills development relating to leading as lawyers. We look forward to engaging you in our celebration and exploration.

Transportation & Parking
McGhee Tyson Airport
McGhee Tyson Airport serves the city of Knoxville and surrounding communities and is located 11 miles from the University of Tennessee campus.
All major airlines offer daily service including American Airlines, Delta, and United. Allegiant and Frontier also offer limited service.
Car rental is located at the lower level of the airport terminal building near baggage claim. To find a rental car, you may visit the any of the major rental car websites.
Nashville International Airport
Nashville International Airport is located 172 miles from the University of Tennessee campus.
All major airlines offer daily service including American Airlines, Delta, and United. Allegiant, Frontier, Southwest, Spirit, and other airlines also provide service.
Car rental is located on Level 1 of the Main Terminal at the North and South end.
Note: Nashville is in the Central time zone, which is one hour behind Knoxville time. Please factor that into your travel time.
Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport
All major airlines offer daily service including American Airlines, Delta, and United.

CAMPUS PARKING
Parking is most readily available directly behind the College of Law building in the Volunteer Hall parking garage on White Avenue between 16th Street and James Agee Street. Please let us know if you plan to drive to campus and park in this garage at any point during the conference.
Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) operates buses, trolleys, and para-transit across the city. It carries more than 3.6 million passengers each year.
This two-day conference will take place Thursday, June 15 and Friday, June 16, 2023 and is hosted by The University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville, Tennessee. This is the 14th meeting of the National Business Law Scholars Conference, an annual conference that draws legal scholars from across the United States and around the world. Presenters hail from a variety of business law disciplines. This website will be updated with the conference program and information about transportation, lodging, parking, and more as the conference date approaches.
Call for Papers
We welcome all scholarly submissions relating to business law. Junior scholars and those considering entering the academy are especially encouraged to participate. If you are thinking about entering the academy and would like to receive informal mentoring and learn more about job market dynamics, please let us know when you make your submission.
Submission Guidelines
You may use the “Submit now!” button on this conference website to submit an abstract by Friday, April 28, 2023. Please be prepared to include in your submission the following information about you and your work:

– Keywords (3-5 words)
– Does the paper relate to DEI issues?*
– Dietary restrictions
– Mobility restrictions
* If yes, based on availability, would you prefer to be on (1) a DEI-focused panel, (2) a subject matter-focused panel (not specifically DEI-focused), or (3) any panel (i.e., no preference as to type of panel)?
