UT Law Professor Penny White recently joined renowned Constitutional law scholar Erwin Chemerinsky for a discussion on judicial independence and accountability at the thirteenth annual Judge William A. Ingram Memorial Symposium hosted by Santa Clara Law School in California on January 10.
Chemerinsky is the dean of First Amendment Law at the University of California-Irvine School of Law and is one of the most cited legal scholars in the United States.
White is the director of the Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution at the University of Tennessee College of Law, E.E. Overton Distinguished Professor of Law, and a former Tennessee Supreme Court justice. She has published articles on judicial independence, the judicial election process, and the role money plays in elections.
The topic discussed was “Judicial Independence and Accountability: Retention and Recall Campaigns.” The symposium’s primary subject was jury independence and judicial accountability in regards to judicial retention and recall campaigns, a hot topic of discussion within legal and political circles nationwide.
