The College of Law faculty have released the latest in the video series “How Did We Get Here?” with further examination of the U.S. jury system.
In this most recent addition to the series, Professor Penny White discusses how juries rarely, if ever, reflect the racial diversity of the community – particularly in criminal cases.
Members of the College of Law faculty began producing the series in July to examine the role of the legal system in institutionalized racism.
The project is spearheaded by the College of Law’s anti-racism task force and was prompted by the death of George Floyd.
Thus far, videos in the series have addressed residential redlining, racial disparities in healthcare, biased legal reasoning and racial discrimination in jury selection.
White’s addition further examines jury selection and how discrimination in the selection of jurors violates the equal protections clause of the U.S. Constitution.
