This fall, the University of Tennessee College of Law announced its new Strategic Plan titled Tennessee Law: Lighting the Way. The title pays tribute to the University of Tennessee’s official symbol, the Torchbearer, and the school’s Volunteer Creed, “One that beareth a torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others.” In choosing this title, the College hopes to convey its commitment to guiding and serving others.
The Strategic Plan was the product of two years of work led by the Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Interim Associate Dean for Faculty Development Teri Baxter. UT Law faculty, alumni, students, and staff were provided a number of opportunities to give input and weigh in on the priorities for the college over the next five years.
The Strategic Plan opens with a vision statement: “To be the premier law school in the southeast, distinguished by our influential scholarship, commitment to public service, and exceptional preparation of future lawyers to be ethical and skilled leaders within the profession.” It then describes UT Law’s five strategic goals, which are to: (1) prepare our students “at the highest level to resolve legal problems, serve clients, promote justice, and be leaders in the profession and in their communities”; (2) conduct influential, collaborative, and innovative research; (3) provide educational and legal services to communities across Tennessee and beyond; (4) recruit and retain a highly talented and diverse group of students, faculty, and staff; and (5) increase awareness of UT Law’s vision, strengths, and achievements through enhanced marketing.
