The University of Tennessee College of Law’s Institute for Professional Leadership has been recognized for “leading the way in educational innovations.”
The Institute for Professional Leadership is one of only eight U.S. law school programs honored by Bloomberg Law’s Law School Innovation Program as a top-scoring innovative legal education program in student development.
In highlighting the Institute for Professional Leadership’s work, the Bloomberg Law assessment is that the institute’s courses “allow students to develop as leaders in the legal profession, government, nonprofit and for-profit organizations (including educational institutions), and the community as a whole.”
Bloomberg Law further notes that the Institute for Professional Leadership offers “programs that are pioneering student development in ways that improve the law school experience and foster career readiness.”
The Institute for Professional Leadership, established in 2014, focuses on helping students identify and develop leadership skills, professional values, and career paths through interdisciplinary programming beyond a strictly legal context.
It regularly offers four core leadership-related courses, maintains a blog on leadership development, hosts speakers on important leadership topics, produces publications and presentations on lawyer leadership and the education of lawyer leaders, supports pro bono and public service engagement and provides leadership training through CLE programs for the profession.
Interim Director Joan Heminway said it is affirming to see the institute recognized nationally and to know that others appreciate the work that is underway.
“Our co-founders, Doug Blaze and Buck Lewis, are visionaries in lawyer-leader education. When they originated our Lawyers as Leaders course, they knew they were onto something,” Heminway said. “Their vision continues to inspire the Institute’s work.”
