University of Tennessee College of Law alumnus David Overstreet won a spot on the Illinois Supreme Court Tuesday defeating his opponent by 63 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.
Overstreet graduated from the College of Law in 1991. He has held the position of Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court Judge since 2017.
Overstreet first joined the bench when he was appointed a circuit court judge in Illinois’ 2nd Judicial Circuit Court in 2007. He was then elected to the circuit court in 2008, appointed to the appellate court in 2017, and won election to the appellate court in 2018. He also worked in small, private firms in southern Illinois. In Knoxville, he was an attorney in the law office of Peter G. Angelos from 1992 until 1995.
Overstreet thanked voters Wednesday in a Facebook post.
“It is the honor of a lifetime to be elected by the citizens of the 5th Judicial District of Illinois to serve as your next Supreme Court Justice.”
Overstreet and his wife Suzanne have three children.
