Field Placements and Semester in Residence

Field Placements

Field placements involve supervised legal work by a law student in a professional placement, as approved by the employer. Students receive academic credit for this work at a rate of 50 hours of work (per term) = 1 credit hour. Students work with a faculty supervisor and an employer supervisor to maximize the experiential learning of the participating student. Field placements occurring during the Fall and Spring semesters are covered in the regular tuition paid by the student. Summer field placements require addition tuition per academic hour sought.

The Career Center is happy to help facilitate the hiring process for field placements. To learn more about potentially hiring a student for a field placement, please contact Joe Christian at christian@utk.edu or 865-974-4349.

Nashville Semester in Residence Program

The Semester in Residence offers UT Law students the opportunity to spend the spring semester gaining valuable experience related to their career interests in Nashville. This opportunity provides the experience of hands-on legal work that aligns with student interests in working with either a government entity or a non-profit organization.
