Last year, the Forensic Science Committee of the National Academy of Sciences recommended sweeping changes to the United States’ forensic science system based on recommendations and reports from a broad collection of experts. This symposium focused on forensic science issues that impact civil and criminal litigation and featured some of the country’s premier forensic experts including Dr. William Bass (founder of the Body Farm); Professor Margaret Berger (member of the National Academies’ Committee on Science, Technology, and Law and on the Committee on Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Science Community); and experts in DNA, fingerprinting, forensic fire investigation, and general evidence collection and analysis.
